I only discovered Indian cuisine in 1988 in Manchester, which is a story in itself. I didn’t eat Indian food growing up as my dad had endured a troop ship passage through the Southern Ocean with Indian chefs, so curries were never seen on our kitchen table. My mother for use curry powder in some dishes but very mildly,

So for my last meal I chose another local restaurant – Chutney Mary’s. I thought I would splurge and have the degustation meal – 7 courses and a glass of wine, I didn’t realise it was a glass of wine paired with each course! Soi really did some damage to my sobriety. Fortunately I wasn’t driving. I could barely walk the 250m home afterwards.

Before my ordering error became obvious, I started with a Negroni Sour (which I found rather sweet and excellent. But then the courses and their accompanying wines progressively arrived.

The food was exquisite. I might have lost my sense of balance but not my sense of taste. Though I was rather disinhibited and even asked the waiter could I take his photo. He seemed chuffed I think.

Fortunately I didn’t glance at the bill when it came. I thought the meal was simply excellent.
